7 Interesting Facts About Bugs and Pests

In the pest control industry, there are a few ways to keep them out of the home with a simple diy or homemade remedy, but there are numerous instances where it is important to call up an exterminator or pest control company to help make sure there isn’t an infestation in your home. It is also important to know what you need to know about pest control and the industry itself before calling anyone up. There can be thousands of dollars worth of damage if you do not know much about pests and how to keep them out. But even with that information looming over you, sometimes it is pretty cool to know some interesting facts about those pesky pests.

Here are 7 interesting facts about bugs and pests.

  1. Bed bugs are kind of like vampires.

Bed bugs technically “feed” off of the blood of mammals and birds. But they can also live for quite a while without having to eat, so it makes them a little less scary than vampires, but not less of a threat.

  1. We have bananas, avocados, and mangos thanks to bats.

Bats help pollinate tons of different fruit on our planet and some plants even require the help from only bats to pollinate. Some of these plants are nuts, cacao, agave, and many, many more (almost 300 more!).

  1. Houseflies taste using their feet.

Have you ever noticed those little flies rub their little legs together, making them look like they are hatching an evil plan? Well that is actually them tasting what they are standing on. Flies live on a liquid diet, so it is important for them to be able to taste the liquids that they stand in to see if it is edible for them.

  1. Mosquitoes are drawn towards stinky feet.

Now, you may not think this is very true, but it is. Have you ever noticed that mosquitos leave more bits around your ankles and feet than the other parts of the body? That is because they are attracted to the scent of sweaty and stinky feet.

  1. Cockroaches have existed for over millions of years.

Cockroaches have existed and been around for almost 200 million years. They lived amongst the dinosaurs and terrorized them like how they terrorize us now.

  1. Cockroaches can live without their head for almost a week.

Making these insects even more gross and terrifying, they can live without their heads for up to a week, no food for a month, and no water for 2 weeks.

  1. Raccoons have tiny hands.

Now, this one is more widely known amongst people, but raccoons have tiny little hands that help them steal things out of our trash. While they do not have thumbs, their  hands have 5 fingers that help them easily grab and hold things.
